Matt Kemp, RF, Los Angeles Dodgers
For a few years now, Kemp has been touted as the five-tool player of the future. In 2006, Kemp swung at too many pitches and was sent back down to the minors to learn how to be more selective at the plate.
In 2007, the training paid off. Kemp returned to the big leagues to hit .342 in 98 games, with 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases. Clearly, he looks like a franchise player in the making.
So why are the Dodgers eager to trade him? Now is as good a time as any, considering that in 2007 Kemp also proved to be a clubhouse nuisance, disobeying team rules and annoying several Dodger veterans. Even the L.A. media, which largely gave the benefit of the doubt to one Milton Bradley, found several problems with Kemp’s demeanor, labeling him a “jerk in the making.”
Even though Kemp is only 23, if he does stay with the Dodgers, look for his progress to be slow and steady instead of a huge burst. He’ll have a tough time shaking his reputation, and even if his bat is ready for the big leagues, his ability to handle the media is not.
Bottom line: The Albert Pujols comparisons will have to wait.
